DISPOSING of the contents of the portable loo is one of the downsides to life afloat, but a Midlands company has come up with an environmentally friendly solution that actually works.
The One-Chem cassette toilet was launched in April 2009 in one caravan shop in Worcestershire and within nine months it was being stocked in more than 900 caravan dealerships and chandlers.
Not only has One-Chem attracted interest in the UK but thanks to a German tourist who purchased a bottle of this all- British product at the Golden Castle Caravan show at Malvern last year, news of the product quickly spread through German internet forums and it is now being exported to all German-speaking countries.
Founding director Hadrian Garner explained that One-Chem Ltd gained its expertise within the toilet industry from its award-winning sister company Flush-it Ltd.
But it found the industry standard chemicals being used were not environmentally friendly in the UK and did not work very well. Hadrian set about the difficult project of developing his own chemicals that actually worked while still being kind to the environment. This was achieved through the help of a family friend qualified in micro-biology.
While researching this project, Hadrian identified that his family hobby, caravanning, and canal boating had similar problems with the toilets and the treatment of human waste. This realisation inspired the research and testing to develop the One-Chem brand.
Once the product was in its final stages of testing,Hadrian knew he had something fantastic to offer the boating and caravan community. It was at this point that he teamed up with his cousin Jon Oakes, a fellow caravan owner and boat enthusiast and former director of the UK’s largest vehicle preparation company.
They said: “We now want to share our product’s success with the rest of Europe. Coupled with this, One-Chem is manufactured/bottled and labelled all within the Midlands region, keeping manufacturing alive in the UK.”
